Within the hustle and bustle of daily life we often get so busy that we forget to take care of ourselves. As women we tend to make sure we look after everything and everyone else, but put our own bodies and minds last on the priority list.
Stretching yourself too far, racing from one thing to another and not taking the time to take a break has been linked to many issues in women, from exhaustion, health and mental health issues. So taking a little time for yourself isn’t “selfish” or “over indulgent” it really does improve the way you feel about yourself!
Self-care means different things for different people, and learning to love or relove yourself comes from knowing yourself – what you love, what you dislike, what your interests are. Making yourself a priority in your own life enables you to learn to truly take care of yourself the way that you should.
We have listed a few simple and easy to do tips to make caring and reloving yourself that much easier:
1. Start a compliments record
Keep a record of kind and complimentary things people say about you that you can look at, at a later date when you are feeling low.
2. Scratch off something that has been on your to-do list for a while
Complete something on your to-do list that you have been procrastinating for ages, it will feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulder.
3. Take a different route to work
It sounds simple but changing any routines is a way to refresh your neural pathways in your brain and keep it happy and healthy.
4. Silence the negative voices on your social media feeds
Spring-cleaning your social media feeds regularly is healthy and helps to remove unwanted voices. You don’t even need to delete them, you can just mute those that are either negative or make you feel negative about yourself.
5. Take three deep breaths
Take a moment to oxygenate: breathe into your abdomen, and let the air flow through your stomach and chest. This will help you relax and center yourself again.
6. Go on a self-date
Even it is just an hour, spend some time doing something that you love, whether it maybe going to a rugby match, visiting an art gallery or reading a book. It’ll be time spent without worry about pleasing others – only you.
7. Keep track of your accomplishments
We are often so focused on our to-do lists, moving onto the next task, that we don’t celebrate what we have accomplished each day. Take some time and make a list of what you are proud of that day – did you spend time with a friend that you haven’t seen in a while? Did you meet a deadline?
8. Reward your inner child
Think back to what you enjoyed when you were a child – maybe it was a specific comic or flying a kite, or even finger painting – embark on that again and embrace the warmth of the feeling of nostalgia that will wash over you.
9. Learn to cook your favourite meal
It’s one thing to buy yourself your favourite takeaway or ready-made meal, but learning to make it yourself means that you can make it whenever you need that pick me up a pleasurable little indulgence and have it exactly how you want to; you can have it as often as you want and it will give you a sense of accomplishment. Also, the act of cooking can be a soothing pastime.
10. Treat yo’self
Just as the popular scene in Parks and Recreation insinuated, it is sometimes important to just take a day off and treat yourself to what you want, whether it may be a massage, a chocolate or those new shoes that you’ve been eyeing for the past few weeks. Close your eyes and give yourself a reward after all the work that you have put in.
