If you thought we had problems with freedom of speech in South Africa, then take a good look at other countries, like Russia, where three women of the band Pussy Riot were found guilty of so-called “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred”.
Okay, so the name “Pussy Riot” doesn’t exactly role off the tongue, and I suppose they did take their song into a church with lyrics that included “…shit, shit, the Lord's shit…”
But three long years? Behind bars? For this?
The song that got them arrested in the first place, entitled a Punk-Prayer "Virgin Mary, Put Putin Away", calls for just that: to get rid of Putin – which, I guess just tempted him to do the exactly that… to them!
Apparently the judge argued that the bands' feminist beliefs were part of encouraging religious hatred. So Maria Alyokhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Yekaterina Samutsevich have each been sentenced to three years in jail.
The movement "Free Pussy Riot" has now gone global, with people all over the world protesting and fighting for what the band stands for: gender equality, democracy and freedom of expression.
But it seems that not even a jail sentence can get them down. Immediately after their sentencing, Pussy Riot released a new single, “Putin Lights up the Fires.”
Hmm, let's see what they come up with in jail.
