The actress and musician teased her new look with a photo of a pile of blonde hair on the floor of a salon, before posting a striking selfie of her platinum-blonde buzz cut. And the Big Little Lies actress certainly stood out from the crowd at the prestigious event - despite the attendance of newly bleached Katy Perry and Cara Delevingne.

Getting your hair platinum is tricky, and if you want to retain your precious locks post-transformation it’s advisable to book in for a consultation with an expert who can talk you through the process.

Will platinum blonde suit me?

“Whilst there is currently a big trend for white blondes it does not suit everyone, so it’s important to come in for a consultation prior to your actual booking,” Nana Gries, senior colourist at Neville Hair & Beauty tells Cover Media. “We have shade charts which you can hold up against your skin to see if a platinum tone would suit you,” she explains. “Although achievable on all lengths I always feel the shorter the hair the better when it comes to platinum.” She also advises older women to go lighter as this will give the complexion a bit of a lift.

Bleaching brittle, fragile or over processed hair will only further damage your locks, as they will not withstand the chemicals required to achieve the platinum colour. “During your consultation the colourist will check the condition of your hair and assess whether it is safe to carry out a colour transformation, (give advice) on the maintenance process and advise on styling to complement the desired colour. Another important factor to consider is your lifestyle, if you are a swimmer, forget it! Your hair will turn green from the chlorine,” explains the senior colourist.

Protect your locks pre-bleach

Few people can achieve a platinum tone in one sitting, any previous colour will need to be stripped from the hair,” says Nina. She advises using Olaplex, a bond restructuring treatment, to help hair withstand the chemical process needed to lift the hair to a platinum tone. Your hair will not be able to withstand the amount of bleaching required if you have a dark natural base.

How to maintain the colour at home

Looking after your colour will require specialised products to hydrate and prevent colour fade. Try not to wash your hair too often as this will wash the colour out of your hair and, when you do, avoid very hot water as it is likely to fade the colour. . Kerastase Reflection Chroma captive shampoo and masque is a good choice, or Suzi suggests JOICO Blonde Life Shampoo and Conditioner as well as their Blonde Life Brightening Masque, which are specially formulated to keep hair healthy and your colour looking bright. So now you’re all set to take the icy blonde plunge!
