Our beauty stashes can become quite a mess over the year and while the de-cluttering process can be tedious, by tossing the old and tired products you can make room for new favourites.
Here are some of our top tips for getting your beauty essentials in top notch condition in no time at all.
Clean the make-up bag
It’s important to clean your cosmetics bag regularly as it can be a perfect hideaway for bacteria. If you have a fabric bag, simply turn it inside out and toss in the washing machine with dark clothing. For plastic-lined bags wipe them down with a wet cloth and soapy water, or use a swipe of rubbing alcohol if you really want to disinfect.
Ditch products you never use
If your make-up bag is jammed full of products, it’s probably a good idea to de-clutter. So next up, sort your cosmetics into piles and divide into everyday use and items that you only use of the weekend. Then go through the products that you never use and throw them out, even if they’re still in good condition. If you’re never going to use that silver eyeshadow, there’s no point letting it weigh down your kit!
Check expiry dates
As you sort through your cosmetics, be sure to throw out anything that’s expired or been in your bag for over a year. Mascara should be discarded every three to six months while eyeliners can be used from six to 12 months. Foundation, lipstick and concealer can last much longer, up to two years. If you are prone to sensitive skin, write on the label with a marker pen the date you opened the product so you can easily keep track.
Wash beauty brushes
Sponges and the bristles of your make-up brushes can become a breeding ground for germs. Gather all of your product applicators and wash them with natural soap and warm water. Let them air dry on a towel. Be sure to wipe over pencil sharpeners and metal nail tools with rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs too.
