To ensure your eyeshadow lasts all night, it’s important to firstly prepare your lids with a primer.

Urban Decay’s Eye Primer Potion is a tried-and-tested favourite, and will help to keep your colours looking vibrant and crease free. Once your primer is in place, it’s time for the fun part – adding your eyeshadow! No matter what colour pigment you pick, it’s best to stick with a maximum of two shades, and to opt for shadows which have a smooth sheen rather than actual glitter.

A great option is Jane Iredale’s Eye Shere Liquid Eye Shadow, which comes in gorgeous metallic shades like Grey Silk, a soft silver with a hint of lilac, and not only features a quick-drying finish but also comes with a foolproof wand applicator. Genius!

But don’t be afraid to have fun with colour either. Now’s the time to switch-up your smoky eye, and try something new, like a deep red. For instance, the limited edition Indes Galante eyeshadow duo from Nars' Sarah Moon collection is a great investment. The matte burgundy hue looks great swiped across the lids, while the sparkling grey works well when dashed over top or dotted on the lower lash line.

While it can be tempting to bring your eyeshadow above the eyelid crease, when it comes to metallic textures it is best to keep them close to the lash line to avoid highlighting any wrinkles or lines. If you desire a strong shimmer but precise finish, sometimes liquid eyeshadow or eyeliner products are the answer. One favourite at the moment is Mary Kay’s Gel Eyeliner Duo, which features a bright gold and deep bronze, and can be used along the lashes to give an artful look.

But if the idea of shiny eyeshadows feels a bit bold, a nice way to try out the trend without going overboard is by using eyeliner pencils. Stila’s Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner comes in a range of on-trend colours, such as Blue Fin, a dark shimmery blue. Or Anastacia Beverly Hills’ Metallic Luster Liner is a fabulous buy, as the creamy gold creates the look of liquid metal. It can be used to highlight inner eye corners and the Cupid's bow too.
