REVIEW: What to do, eat and explore at Walkersons Hotel & Spa in Mpumalanga

accreditation

Mpumalanga is well known for its scenic beauty. When I got an invitation to spend two nights with other media at this majestic province, I knew I had to go.

Hospitality

We stayed at Walkersons Hotel & Spa, Dullstroom. A dusty road leads to the estate’s beautiful entrance.  From the outside, the hotel has a tranquil feel, you immediately feel calm and relaxed when driving in. While driving there, we welcomed the change in scenery as the hustle and bustle of the city made way for a breathtakingly serene landscape. The staff at the hotel and at the restaurant is incredibly friendly and helpful. There was always someone at hand to offer assistance as well as managers constantly checking up you.

Rooms

The hotel is well kept with clean rooms and well-maintained grounds but what will really take your breath away is the view from your balcony. The tastefully decorated room was generous in size, and had been thoughtfully heated to the perfect temperature against the cold weather in the evenings. I was glad to see that the hotel has an open wifi network for guests. But the highlight in being in those rooms has to be the outside showers, I was freaked out a bit at first because I was paranoid that someone was watching me, but the showers are fully covered.

Wining and dining

On day one, once we were settled in, we had a lunch outside overlooking dams and stunning scenery. The food is delicious, and the hotel staff always makes sure you’re catered for. One of the ladies we were with was vegetarian but that didn’t seem to be problem at all. A day after we arrived, we indulged in a picnic by one of the lakes, the picnic basket was filled with an assortment of delicious treats (read champagne and chicken).

Activities and entertainment

One of the many ways Dullstroom blew my mind was the fact that there's just so much to do. I may or may not have spammed my Instagram storyfeed with pics and videos from our trip because everything looks beautiful. The hotel does offer a few activities. If you’re up for adventure, you can go hiking, which I did because I was feeling adventurous after breakfast. The hiking trail has clear signs and marvelous views. Walkersons also has a beautiful and peaceful spa, even though I didn’t get a massage because I opted for a pedicure, but the ladies who got massages and facials were boasting about how refreshed they felt after their treatments. The hotel also has a beautiful swimming pool. However, we could only admire it from a distance due to the cold water.

I also tried my hand in fly-fishing, which I’m embarrassed to admit that I failed dismally. Walkersons has excellent fishing facilities; the hotel boasts 14 lakes and dams, all stocked with rainbow trout, making the estate a fly fisher’s paradise.
