Inside Gold Reef City’s wondrous theme park you will find a place that is truly the jump-off. Once you enter Jump City you don’t really want to bounce too soon as there is quite a bit else you can do in this indoor trampoline park. There’s a foam pit you can leap into, and there’s also dodgeball...

And when you get to the trampolines, there is a whole bunch of amazingly different ones for you to try out – which is actually quite the workout.

This park does have a lot of rules. Too many I would say, but then again, I hate rules. In order to jump, you will need to purchase a special pair of grip socks that help keep you steady on the trampolines’ nylon surfaces. You then have to watch a safety video.

There is only one designated area for you to do those intricate front flips and jack knives – you can only jump up and down everywhere else.

There were a lot of young children at the park, not at all like the vibe at Bounce in Midrand or Fourways, which is more of grab-a-juice-and-wear-your-yoga-pants, you know, North side flexing. Jump City felt more like a kiddies’ play area.

The main reason I headed out to Jump City was not because they provide an alternative to Bounce. This particular arena has two basketball lanes. Standing at an underwhelming 1.75 metres, soaring towards a hoop like Michael Jordan has always been just a dream of mine.

Drawing on the NBA Africa game for inspiration, I was adamant that this would be my moment. I asked a friend to assist me with an intricate move known as an alley-oop. He would throw the ball to me and I would catch it mid-air and slam dunk it home. On the baby sized hoop, this went quite well. Bear in mind that the ball is not a standard basketball and the rims are padded. So not quite like Mike, but beggars can’t be choosers.

We then shifted focus to the standard-sized hoop. I prepared myself for glory, bouncing twice in preparation and began my vertical leap. Unfortunately for me, I couldn’t reach the rim, not even with the help of a trampoline.

Jump City is fairly cool, but after the first 10 minutes of your session, the roar of the Anaconda and the thrill of the Tower of Terror begin to beckon. What surprised me was how sore my back was after the session. It may seem like fun for the kids, which it is, but trust me when I say trampolines provide quite the burn.
