Emma Watson faces backlash after launching a campaign for gender equality

*Updated: According to the IBT the site emmawatsonyouarenext was a publicity stunt by a marketing company with the supposed intent to shut down 4chan. The actual responses from 4chan users were very real, unfortunately.

Yesterday Emma Watson, best known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies, launched the “He for She” campaign for gender equality in the United Nations.

As Carmen Williams wrote in a previous Women24 article highlighting the 9 best quotes from her speech, the campaign is about the following:

“Since being appointed six months ago, Emma spoke about the stigma against feminism and those who fight for women’s rights. By involving men and women in the HeForShe campaign, Emma hopes to change the way we all think about gender inequality - making it an important issue for both men and women. She quotes:
'...The more I have spoken about feminism the more I have realized that fighting for women’s rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating. If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop.'

The He for She campaign allows men to sign up and pledge solidarity for gender equality. Men are asked to join and pledge the following:

Gender equality is not only a women’s issue, it is a human rights issue that requires my participation. I commit to take action against all forms of violence and discrimination faced by women and girls.

The campaign was met with a backlash by 4Chan users who are now threatening to reveal stolen nude pictures of the actress in retaliation of her call for unity.

Mashable reports that the actress has been the target of a stream of threats and hate from the social sharing site.
