Is this really the face I deserve?

Hi everyone,

My grandmother used to say that you get the face that you deserve. She didn’t mean that you’re born with the face that you deserve – since she didn’t believe in reincarnation that would’ve been a bit unfair, no? She meant that your face would grow around your personality and eventually reflect the type of person you are.

You might think this is just a clever ploy to get little girls to be good and sweet and full of the milk of human kindness (and you may be right) but I’ve seen this happen to many faces with my own eyes.

Sometimes it takes years, sometimes even decades, but if you’re a miserable, bitter, selfish, entitled, humourless, disgruntled cow, eventually you’ll look like a miserable, bitter, selfish, entitled, disgruntled, humourless cow. True story.

Problem is, we can’t just constantly twirl through life, grinning like loons in a mad attempt to age beautifully. Sometimes bad things happen. Sometimes sad things happen. And sometimes we just don’t feel like smiling, okay?

Generally though, people who are happier are friendlier, easier to get along with, easier to work with and much nicer to spend time with and this will eventually show on their faces. That’s why we’re especially drawn to these people when we’re in an uncomfortable situation or when we need help in a crisis.

And yet, despite all this, there is the existence of the BRF or Bitchy Resting Face. This is the real spanner in the works when it comes to reading people you don’t know intimately, and it’s a daily curse for those of us who have this condition. I’m afraid my grandma was wrong this time, not everyone gets the face they deserve.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with BRF this is a syndrome that people of various dispositions and personalities suffer from. Your resting face is your neutral face – the facial expression you carry when you’re not consciously trying to convey emotion with your features. When people have BRF our neutral, resting faces make us look like, well… bitches.

Having this condition can make you seem unapproachable, unfriendly and even downright rude. The thing is, it’s completely unconscious and we shouldn’t be confused with people who are actually unapproachable, unfriendly and rude.

Because I’m not a bitch. My face just thinks I am. So please give us BRFers the benefit of the doubt the next time you see us scowling somewhere. It hurts our friendly hearts when people think we’re mean.

Do you have bitchy resting face? What’s the most unfair comment you’ve ever received about your facial expression when you were just minding your own business?
