Isn’t it time we stopped calling models “plus-size”?

accreditation
There is no doubt that the fashion industry has been crushing the self-esteem of little girls and women for decades. So what can we do to change it?

Well change has to come from within the industry. And it’s happening, if a bit slowly.

This year we saw the first Down syndrome and wheelchair-bound models on the catwalk at New York Fashion Week. Models over 65 are being used in a host of ad campaigns now, and the French are putting a stop to dangerously thin models by banning them from fashion shows.

But perhaps one of the most important changes is the use of healthier, more average sized models recently. These models, who have been dubbed plus-sized models, have taken the world by storm, but some people are not too happy with this label - enter Stefania Ferrario.

According to Buzzfeed, the model is on a mission to stop the term “plus-sized” in the modelling industry. The gorgeous model who is the face of Dita Von Teese’s lingerie label posted this on her Instagram to get the point across:

We couldn’t agree more with Stefania, especially since perfectly slim, average sized women are being called “plus-size”.

The fashion industry has been highly criticised for using tiny models, so the use of average sized women is a pretty big deal – one they want to point out at every opportunity. Yet by calling them “plus-sized” they are really just creating another negative label.

A model is a model regardless of size or shape.
