MPs don’t take rape seriously

This weekend the Minister of Public Enterprises, Malusi Gigaba tweeted to Derek Hanekom “@Derek_Hanekom no, let's talk about the slutwalk. Now, I wanna attend as an observer. Might get lucky."

@SamWilson1 (who is also the Editor of Women24) responded:  “When will it become unacceptable for our senior government officials to make sex jokes about rape? You represent us, @mgigaba. Appalling.”

The minister later apologised, saying “I've found out what this about and how serious it is and I retract my earlier comment” and “I've just been informed regarding slutwalk and I'd completely misunderstood it. All men should support it 100%”.

Sam Wilson reckons an appropriate apology would be if Gigaba puts his marching shoes where his mouth is and joins the Johannesburg Slutwalk on the 24 September. Women24 stands behind her.

If the minister is really serious about this issue, he should attend the Slutwalk and gain publicity for the cause.
