Pet hates and small pleasures

My life really is about the small things. I take great joy in absurd little victories and the silliest things can really drive me up the wall. I know this probably doesn’t say much about me as a person, but it is the reality of my everyday life. Gah! I hate it when a cliché describes me so aptly.

There I go again, see? A small thing that bugs the golden honey out of me.

Mostly though, it’s impatience that drives my pet peeves. You want to walk up the stairs at a snail’s pace? Well then for the love of all is pure and holy, don’t keep pace with your equally sluggish buddy and be so kind to let me pass.

You want to ask a list of completely inane questions to a speaker because you’re in love with the sound of your own voice? Then wait till everyone can leave and corner the poor sap afterwards, okay?

And please, if I take the time to answer all your questions painstakingly in an email or written document then please read the bloody thing before you come back to me with the exact same questions THAT I’VE ALREADY ANSWERED.

Honestly. I get annoyed just thinking about it.

Luckily, the smallest things also delight me. I love piercing the film of microwavable packets with a fork. Those crisp BANG, BANG, BANGS just thrill me. And then when  I arrive back just in time to stop the microwave with one second to go, thus sidestepping the awful beeping noise.

It’s the same with black bags – that satisfying snap they make when you yank them apart instantly puts me in a good mood.

Or when you finish your sandwich and your coffee at exactly the same time.

Or when a song that’s playing in your head suddenly plays on the radio.

Or when the waiter’s tip works out to a perfectly round number.

Or when you get goosebumps when you sink into the bath because the water is so nice and hot.

Or when you hit a row of green lights in a single lucky streak.

Or when the lift takes you directly to your floor without stopping.

Getting affected by the little things might not be ideal, but if you’re going to get annoyed by small things, you might as well get pleasure from them too.
