What the info bill means

accreditation
You don’t have to be pro the media to be anti the information bill. This bill is the first step towards censorship and information blackout. A technique used only by governments who have many things to hide.

Why is this bill so dangerous?

Well on Monday Archbishop Emiritus Desmond Tutu said:

"A state is entitled to keep information outside the public domain in instances where publication may jeopardise state security, but if the legal mechanism created to protect state security... prevents criminality from being exposed, the mechanism is patently flawed."

The bill proposes that:

•    Whistleblowers and journalists who report on what the government deems secret will face up to 25 years in jail time.

•   This means that no-one will be able to disclose secret state info – EVEN if it is in public interest.

•    It will be illegal to expose even corruption and serious crime.

•    Government officials will have to declassify information before anyone would be allowed to make the info public.

•    Cosatu and Samwu say the bill will make criminals of whistleblowers in government departments who stand up against corruption and crime.

What do you think about this bill?
