I’m getting fit! Me?

It would appear that while getting thinner I seem to have been sneakily getting fitter too.

Exercise was not a planned part of this regime. I am a dedicated couch potato. Much to my surprise, about three weeks into the Weighless plan I had more energy than I used in a day, and so landed up going back to a spinning class. I like spinning. It’s extreme gym – 3 hours of exercise in 45 minutes. It’s also the only thing on offer at a gym that doesn’t bore me witless. Also, spinning is something I can do alone and not feel isolated at the gym. It’s also similar, I guess, in some ways to Weighless; I am told exactly what to do, when and for how long. In a spinning class there is no space for my favourite gym activity - buggering around.

Yesterday I went to a pre-Christmas spinning class. And accidentally landed up in a double class. For real – accidentally!
When the first 45 minutes were up some people left, but there was no warm down or stretch, just an instruction to fetch water if we needed and to keep spinning on the flat road. Without really deciding to, I realised I was staying in the class. As a result, I did a 90 minute spinning class.

I managed! I did the whole class. I stood when told to, raced when so instructed and generally participated like the real spinners. I was somewhat amazed that I was able to do so. 90 minutes is a long time to cycle – even on a flat road, so to have done it up and down imaginary hills, with all sorts of racing bits thrown in for good measure feels like a real achievement.

It also means I have burned off some of the extra calories I think will be unavoidable in the next 24 hours.

Wow – dammit – I did it! I’m amazed!

I believe that often the body is a manifestation of the mind. Not always, but often. I also believe that we allow, or even encourage, things to happen to us, unpleasant things, because of the secondary gain we get.

We get sick because we feel a need to be looked after. We injure ourselves because we are not listening to our bodies or the universe. I do not think this means we have control over everything we do or allow to happen to us; and we are certainly not to blame when things go wrong. But I do think it means that if we can find out why we are letting, or even desiring, something crappy happen to us, perhaps we can get over it faster.

I have had sore ankles for over a year. The holistic types would say that the ankles are a method of going forward, literally. Because I was resisting moving forward, or was moving forward by dint of time, in the wrong direction, my ankles were protesting. The non hippies would say they were hurting cos I was fat as a pig.

Both may be valid.

But interestingly my ankles stopped hurting within about a week of my reaching the headspace in which I am now; the headspace of losing weight, of moving forward in a healthy and valuable (to me) direction.

I had lost all of about 1,5kg when my ankles ceased to hurt – and I have not had a single day of trouble with them since.
Makes you wonder – or does me anyway.
