Check out this handy calorie chart for alcoholic beverages

accreditation

The folks over at Cybercellar (a local online booze shop) have done some research into booze and the amount of calories different types of alcohol contain, and have kindly shared it with us.

Here’s the low-down:

Sauvignon Blanc

This deliciously crisp, sometimes green wine is the perfect pairing with your lunch or dinner salad. But how many calories are in a normal glass, you ask?

We are working on conversion rates of 5 ounces which converts to roughly 150 ml, equivalent to a small glass of wine.

This means a unit of your average Sauvignon Blanc has around 123 calories in it, and around 3 grams of carbohydrates.

Chenin Blanc

Chenin has slightly less calories and average around 120 calories per glass. However, compared to Sauvignon Blanc, it soars in carbohydrates and tips the scale at 4.9 grams per glass.

Chardonnay

In comparison to its white wine counterparts, Chardonnay has significantly less calories. How does 84 calories per glass sound to you?

With an average of 3.18 grams of carbohydrate in each glass, this sounds like a good fit to your new healthy lifestyle.

Rosé

Also significantly lower than Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin, a rosé weighs in at only 83 calories, with a low-carb content of 2.9 grams per glass.

It’s no wonder this pink drink is a favourite. Note, that this only counts for dry wines and not semi-sweet ones!

Cabernet Sauvignon

Our favourite easy-drinking Cabs only have 3 calories more than our Sauvignon Blancs, with 126 calories, and come in below the Chenin’s calories at 3.82 grams Carbs.

Shiraz

This delicious, spicy and moreish wine is a favourite on South African tables next to a lovely steak.  Remember to order a small salad or veg as an alternate to fries.

A glass of Shiraz contains 122 calories and 3.79 grams of carbs in each glass.

This seems somewhat average for what can sometimes be a full-bodied and complex wine, however, be conscious of your consumption.

Merlot

Merlot is much lighter, and contains the same amount of calories as a rosé (83)!

This, coupled with its very average number of carbs, 3.7 grams, makes Merlot the perfect companion for summer evenings.

Champagne/ Méthode Cap Classique

Bubbly fanatics across the country, rejoice! Our favourite bubbly partner happens to be a dieter's dream!

With only 90 calories and carbohydrates racking up an entire 1 gram, there is no excuse not to indulge.

Gin

Touching on our favourite spirits, these prove to be somewhat different. Although packed with calories, gin has very little to zero carbs. With 263 calories, this drink is still one of the most recommended to anyone taking up a summer diet.

Mix in the tonic, however, and the glass is packed with 32 grams of carbs. Our recommendation is to either swap out the tonic for soda water and pack the glass with lemon and mint, or find the low-sugar, low-carb options!

Whiskey

Watching the sunset with a whiskey on the rocks is something every summer dream is made of.

With 250 calories found in every 100 grams, so 105 in a shot, and the carbs leveling out to about 0.1 grams per serving, this is a golden treat whilst watching your calorie count!

Beer

You are expecting beer to simply top the chart on everything, aren’t you? And you are also possibly wondering why we have even bothered to add it in here.

Surprisingly though, there aren’t as many calories as you would think! A can of beer has only 153 calories.
