Lara du Plessis, Emily Farrel, Richard Freund and Lood van Niekerk are continuing to highlight the reality that many homeless and underprivileged South African women go without the basic necessities during their menstruation cycle. They believe, rightly so, that this is an ‘infringement on their right to dignity and privacy.’
According to the group, tampons and pads are far beyond the means of these women. A basic pack of pads costs around R50. The result is that these women spend at least one week in a month without any assistance for their periods, often with uncomfortable and humiliating consequences.
'Periods for Hope' aims to raise money in order to distribute packages consisting of pads, sanitary towels and an energy bars to homeless women around Cape Town. The distribution of these packages will be executed in partnership with The Haven Night Shelter.
These students show their commitment to the cause and in an attempt to raise more awareness for their initiative, the team of 4 will embark on the 11-day cycle, on the 10th of June, from Cape Town to Plettenberg Bay (700km). They aim to raise R100 per kilometer, with their goal set at R70 000.
