Why do Beyonce, Jennifer Garner and Jane Lynch want us to ban this word?

What does it mean to "ban bossy", and why do Beyoncé, Jennifer Garner and Jane Lynch among others want us to do it?

Ban Bossy is a Lean In campaign that focuses on how differently young girls are treated to young boys, especially when it comes to labels.

Ambition is rewarded in boys, while punished in girls. An assertive boy is a leader, but an assertive girl is "pushy", a "know-it-all", or, most commonly, "bossy".

These labels hurt, and as a result, girls are taught from a young age to stay silent while the boys (and later men) around them talk.

This is why we should "ban bossy". No one means making the word illegal, but rather we should ban it, and other harmful words, from our vocabulary, especially when using them to refer to women and girls.

Lean In is a non-profit organization founded by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg to empower all women to achieve their ambitions.

Lean In's philosophy is that, if we can openly face and talk about the challenges women face, we can work together for a better world.
