Come on South Africa what’s wrong with you?

What is going on this country of ours?  The hatred that is coming out of so many corners is scary.  We've forgotten that we’re a rainbow nation, we've forgotten where we came from, we've forgotten about kindness.

Read an online article. Any article.  And then read the comments.  They start off quite nicely but quickly degenerate into slanging matches. People are vicious, over stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with the story itself. Insults are thrown liberally, usually about colour or religion, names are called, accusations flung wildly.

South Africans are filled with anger.

Check out our roads.  Not only the taxi drivers,  even though one waved a knife out his window at me the other day, but the lunch-box brigade in their huge 4 x 4’s, the man on his way to work, the cyclists. Such aggro, such attitude, I’m surprised I’ve only had one knife pulled on me.

Our process of reconciliation clearly never worked.  And don’t get heated up reading that; we have a lot of work still to do in this country. There are tons of issues that we haven’t dealt with properly.  We just gotta look at Nkandla, UCT, Diepsloot, Xenophobia, White privilege, Poverty, Privilege in general, the correct way to spell privilege, and basically - nod your head and say - we are a nation in a lot of trouble.

The causes for our troubles may go back a long way.

But for a minute, let’s just check all those troubles at the door. And think about something.

We all want the same thing. We all want peace.

COME ON SOUTH AFRICA.  Stop fucking it up.  Let’s start being decent again.

We need:

- More kissing.  (As long as the other partner is willing.)

- More singing.  (Even if you sing out of tune.)

- More dancing. (Even if you’re barefoot, or especially if you’re barefoot.)

More involvement. 

We can moan about our lack of leadership and we certainly should hold people accountable for their wrong-doings, past and present.  But let’s try lead ourselves a little too.

Let’s move forward.  Let’s be fantastic. Let’s be fabulous.

And let’s be polite. 

We might just find that it leads to happiness.  And friendship.

It might even lead to love too.
