‘I survived 2012!’

To Bunk or Not to Bunk?

"A long time ago in a little place called Mexico; the Ancient Maya designed a calendar that looked a lot like a gambling chip..."

The purpose of this calendar according to the Mayan people was to predict the future which means the date. Unfortunately this 5,125 year-old Mayan calendar had one flaw, it stops on the 21st December 2012.

Some people believe that on this date, everything will end.

They have built underground bunkers, stockpiled food and medication; they have gone into full apocalypse mode. Some doomsayers foresee doom and destruction.

December 21st will be the day the Earth will be destroyed. Some think it will be because of some nuclear explosion, all life on earth will cease to exist, that’s it finite, and the universe will just cease to exist. Zzzzp!, gone.

Maybe the Aztec calendar man got killed together with his fellow 799.999 when the spanish wiped them out in the sixteenth century. So he couldn’t update the calendar with a new chip.

or

Will it be the dawning of the Age of Aquarius?

I read the most intriguing article that 21-12-2012 won’t be a day like any other.

In the sky an extraordinary and incredibly rare event will take place. The Sun will move to a unique spot in the sky -- and hold still for a while, since it is solstice day. The Sun will sit precisely on the heavenly crossroads between the Milky Way and the galactic equinox, forming a perfect alignment with the center of the galaxy. Hope you not jetting to your holiday on this day.

The Maya's didn't really believe in endings: their conception of time was circular, with every end being the beginning of something new.

So, 2012 shouldn't be an exception, we will either go into 2013 or our calendars will reset to 00.00.00000.

The rest of us, are still in normality mode. I have to be at work on that day, if the Mayans are right, I should be at home. Maybe I should apply for leave, citing the end of the world as my reason to be at home.

What about “the NASAa bbm” doing the rounds.

The phenomenon of the Sun sitting in the heart of the Tree of Life?

The Sun will pass over every Tree every 25,800 years. That's a lot of years, but since the Earth exists for an astonishing 4,5 billion years, the Earth has survived it more than 150,000 times already! Every year, she just got hotter.

Remember Y2K? Everyone was fretting, people stocked up on bottle water etc.

I am going to call JZ just in case. Ask him if he has space for me in his bunker in Nkandla.

On the 22nd of December, I am going to be screaming, “I survived Y2k and 2012 – bring on the next apocalyptic event.”
