So by now you probably know about the #nomakeupselfie trend. Maybe you've even taken part.
The idea is to upload a picture of yourself without make-up and upload it, and then donate to cancer research with an sms. In UK, the trend has apparently already raised £8 million and counting.
However, Jeanne Marie Ryan, an Oxford Student, has posted a #nomakeupselfie for a different cause, the BBC reports.
Her selfie, in which her face is swollen, cut and bruised, is what her face looked like after she was beaten for objecting to a man groping her.
Jeanne was on the dance floor in a club, the Plush Lounge, when the man groped her from behind and told her to smile.
She told him that it was completely inappropriate to touch a woman like that. The man responded with several punches to her face. She believes that he did not expect someone to say anything to him, and that the fact that she got up again after falling at the third or fourth punch enraged him further. The result was this:
As of yet, police are still searching for her attacker.
Many will be shocked at this man's actions, but the mindset behind it is pretty typical. The basic belief that a woman's body does not really belong to her, and that sexual harassment, even rape, can be justified, is widespread.
Women are expected to look nice, to wear make-up, and to smile. They are not expected to fight back, or to stand up for themselves. They are not expected to act like they own their own bodies, and women who do are punished.
Jeanne, who says she wants to channel her rage into something constructive, has since created a page on the fundraising site JustGiving to raise money for the Oxford Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Centre. So far the page has raised over £15 thousand. We really hope it reaches its goal of £100 000.
