Eight steps towards a more satisfying life

Try these practical suggestions to raise your happiness and satisfaction levels:

  • Count your blessings – each day take stock of everything you're grateful for.

  • Practise random acts of kindness – helping others makes you feel generous and capable, as well as connected with those around you.

  • Savour all of life's wonders – the warmth of the sun on your back or the sweetness of a ripe peach are some of life's pleasures. Enjoy the little moments.

  • Thank those who've helped you along life's way – don't wait to express your gratitude.

  • Forgive – don't bear grudges. Remember, forgiving is about your own peace of mind. It will make the other person feel better too, but bearing grudges will ultimately destroy you.

  • Invest time in your loved ones – they're the real riches in your life.

  • Take care of your physical health – you only have one body.

  • Learn to manage your stress in a positive way and don't allow yourself to be overwhelmed by it. Saying "no" is the first step.

    Reclaim your weekends

Remember what life was like when all the shops shut on a Sunday? The streets were quiet, especially on Sunday afternoon, when most people settled down for a snooze, or an idle browse through the newspapers.

Just because everything's open for business, however, doesn't mean you have to be out and about. Taking one day off a week to relax and restore your mind and soul is a really good idea, but you have to be committed to it. It's a realisation I came to recently – that if I took a day off on the weekend, not only would I be more productive and efficient in the week ahead, but the world continued turning!

Our society demands that we push ourselves all the time; sometimes it feels as though there's a competition on to see who can be busiest. But we all need some down-time some guilt-free lounging around to reconnect with ourselves.

Perhaps a Saturday's best for you, or perhaps you work all weekend and get Mondays off. Either way, try to build all your chores into the other six days of the week, and set aside one day for relaxing at home or spending quality time with family and close friends. You'll be amazed how much better you feel mentally.
