Sexual harassment in Universities and the workplace: Know your legal rights

Given the difficult and sensitive nature of this form of abuse many survivors resist coming forward or reporting the incident due to the potential impact that it may have on their careers and job security.

A study and radio talk show is therefore being conducted on the experiences of employees and students.

Regardless of whether the harassment was due to victimization and intimidation, offers of work opportunity, promotion in exchange for sexual favours or non-consensual, the law can assist you.

Are you aware that even a single incident of unwelcome sexual conduct may constitute sexual harassment, as long as this has an impact on your dignity.

You do not need to quit your job or take extended sick leave or feel totally dis-empowered.

This research is being conducted for the purposes of a Masters Law degree at the University of the Johannesburg.

The results of the study and the voice of the radio talk show will allow for a greater awareness by the general public of Sexual Harassment and Gender Discrimination in the Workplace and Universities in South Africa and will also provide survivors with the knowledge of how to take action against this kind of behavior, and give others the courage to come forward and claim back their dignity.?

If you have been sexually harassed or intimidated in the workplace and would like the opportunity to share your story as part of this research, your identity can remain private if you so wish, please contact Gail Blacher on gail@blacher.com or on 082 940 6538.
