What does hunger look like?

The competition, run by Heifer International and renowned fashion magazine, Hunger, asked photographers to submit images they thought best conveyed the word ‘hunger,’ and they got some pretty interesting entries.

From obvious images of uncomfortably thin woman to provocative still-life photographs of empty dinner tables and plates licked clean, the competition hopes to raise awareness about poverty and the hunger-epidemic that threatens so many lives.

'From food, to shelter, clothing, education. . . hunger has become an epidemic on a global proportion in everyone's town, city and country.  So to have an opportunity to help create more awareness of the problem we have was a no-brainer to me' says photographer David Esquire.

With the backing of high-end fashion magazine; Hunger, Heifer International hopes to reach a new audience with the images.

Heifer International President and CEO, Pierre Ferrari says: "Our strategy is to get a new segment of society talking about a sensitive subject." "Art can shape conversation, and it can impact."
