Why do they hate me for being a feminist?

Recently, Jinan Younis, a student blogger for the Guardian Online has received some rather harsh criticism from her male peers after she launched a feminism group in her all-girls high school.

She first started the society when she noticed how pressured the girls at her school were feeling due to their gender: Some had eating disorders, others felt obligated to perform sexual acts and a few were suffering in abusive relationships.

Wanting to make a change and encourage these young women to take back the power society has snatched from them, Jinan formed a feminist group aimed at gender equality.

And this is when the abuse started.

Instead of an applause (which by the way, she deserved), she was met with an angry mob of males targeting her and her fellow members on social networks like Twitter.

She was allegedly labelled a “Feminist bitch” that is “feeding (girls) bullshit.” They even became racist: “All this feminism bull won’t stop uncle Sanjit from marrying you when you leave school.”

You see because, Jinan is from Indian origin.

Now, being a strong-minded and strong-willed feminist myself, I can’t help but feel saddened by this obvious attack on a girl who only wants to make a difference.

Why all the fuss for a feminist society in an ALL-girls school - am I missing something here?

Or is it the fact that Jinan was trying to empower her peers that had these young boys so pissed off?

Regardless of the reason behind the bashing, we would like to give Jinan a hurrah for standing up for what she believes in.

It takes a tough woman to develop a thick skin in this day and age, and a kick-ass young lady to develop one so soon.
