You Can't Sexually Assault a Slut

This article originally appeared on @discordiankitty's blog. Read more posts here.

Now now, guys, calm down. Dylan Moore, aka, "@MrCPT", is not a sexist pig. He doesn't advocate rape culture. All he said was this:

"If you are gonna wear a skirt with no panties then you really can't blame a brother for having a touch..."

He seems to have deleted this initial tweet, but here's a screenshot of him restating the sentiment:

Of course, even though he is clearly stating that it's OK for a guy to sexually grope a woman on the basis of "she's not wearing panties", Mr CPT hastily clarified.

And explained what sort of person disagreed with him.

And clarified some more.

I am honestly unsure how to explain to this person that, by saying a woman's clothes and actions (namely, no panties and smiling) are able to transfer ownership of said woman's body to any man who'd like to have a grab, he is advocating rape culture.

@MrCPT, as soon as you talk about a woman's clothing and actions being "invitations" for unasked for and unwelcome physical contact, you are supporting rape culture. There's simply no getting around it.

The fact that you are seemingly oblivious to what you've said wrong here is really, 100% beyond me. But let's have a go anyway. First, we need to discuss this word "slut" and what it means.

Let's assume the word "slut" refers to a woman who enjoys sex, actively pursues sex and doesn't feel much shame about her naked body.

Unless you are a member of a very rigidly religious community who believes sex is shameful, or you're from 200 years ago and believe women are incapable of enjoying sex, it's unclear why such a person is someone you'd hate or why you consider their choice of morals to be your business.

Even pushing that aside, "wanting sex" is not the same thing as "any man's property to touch at will". Maybe she does want to get laid that night, and that's fine. When she wants to be touched, she'll probably mention it.

That doesn't mean any guy can walk up to her and stick his hand on her vagina without her invitation, not even if she smiled at him.

There's an old anecdote of a female who likes to dress in low-cut tops and then gets angry when people stare. "If you don't want people to look, don't put it on display".

This is the sort of thinking I tend to agree with, and this hypothetical female you claim to have made up for god knows what reason does have her vagina on display. One can assume this means she's OK with you looking at it.

This does not mean she's OK with you touching it. Again, not even if she's smiled at you. No, you do not get to touch it just because you can see it, and a smile is not the same thing as consent. Y

ou are not a four year old, and advocating being Mr Grabby in this hypothetical situation does not make you amusingly controversial, it makes you pretty fucking creepy.

Really. She could be screwing every guy you know. She might even wink at you. This still isn't an invitation for you to simply help yourself to physical contact. Not even a "slut" is someone that you get to touch at will.

The fact that you don't understand this or how it relates to rape culture is seriously fucking worrying.

Let's look at some of the other claims you've made today.

The concept that rape culture is somehow linked only to men is absolute bollocks. As some of your female supporters have shown today, women are equally as capable as men of slut shaming, advocating rape culture and victim blaming.

Ye olde "you disagree with the man therefore you must be a slut" approach.

This second tweet is an exceptionally brilliant example of a, for want of a better word, "misogynist" woman.

Here is a female who is both actually against feminists (people - not necessarily females - who support equal rights for both men and women) and is bothered by the fact that some women don't shave.

Now, I shave, and I don't for a moment believe you have to give up your razor to be a feminist, but I am seriously disturbed at a woman telling another woman to shut up, stop telling a man off, and go shave something.

What's next? Women yelling "tits or gtfo" or "make him a sandwich" at other women?

I also seriously hope Skye doesn't do anything that would be illegal if it weren't for feminists, such as vote, or  display herself wantonly in a bathing suit that doesn't cover her ankles...oh wait.

Skye Barry would like you to know that, despite using the word feminist as an insult, she's not against feminists, and despite making a fuss about @liliradloff not shaving, she's not body shaming anyone.

Eh, sure. In the name of fairness, here's her updated comments on the matter.

On the flip side, men are quite capable of not being pig-headed dickwads. This is not a game of man vs woman.

Now, towards the end of this whole ugly thing, you insisted to many people, including myself, that you had been misquoted, misinterpreted, and that words had been put in your mouth. What you don't seem to understand is people aren't upset with you over one misinterpreted tweet.

People are upset with your entire statement in general, which keeps getting worse and worse.

So there you go ladies. MrCPT is not a sexist. You're just overreacting. He respects women. Providing they're not sluts. Or feminists. Or ugly. Or disagree with him.

I have been told I'm going on about this too much.

Possibly I am, but it bothers me that, not only does @MrCPT still not understand exactly what is wrong with his attitude, he has a multitude of followers and supporters, many of whom are female, who agree with him.

I really do not believe it's unfair or an overreaction to suggest that something is seriously wrong here.
