This hashtag has twitter in a frenzy – and women are not having it!

Ever heard of a ‘girlfriend allowance’? As the controversial term suggests, it refers to the money men give their partners to pay for clothes, food and the like.

But when the idea reared its head on Twitter, it prompted an interesting question: shouldn’t women also start giving their beaus a #boyfriendallowance, if they have the means to do so? 

Plenty of men were all for the idea, arguing that if men and women are to be treated as equals, the allowance could be paid both ways.

 But on the other side of the fence, many women just weren’t having it.

One tweeted: “I might as well Lobola you and you can change your surname to mine.”

Someone even argued that some women are already giving their boyfriends an allowance of sorts.

Another threw in a Julius Malema meme:

Whatever your stance, it’s clear the concept of a #BoyfriendAllowance has plenty of folks hot under the collar. And as always, Twitter has not disappointed, providing some pretty memes and tongue-in-cheek remarks from both sides.
