To flash someone a smile as you go about your day won’t leave you a penny poorer.

But to make someone else smile through a simple and kind gesture costs you even less, yet leaves you feeling richer.

One woman left a coffee shop with more than just her usual brew when a simple act of compassion by the staff made her struggle seem a bit easier.

A Reddit user shared a note the unknown woman left employees, thanking them for their kindness while she was facing one of the most devastating heartbreaks of her life.

“To the Tuesday, September 5th morning staff,” she began her note.

“You’re all too good for this world.”

The woman had just recently made a shattering discovery about her boyfriend and all she wanted was a cup of her favourite coffee.

“Imagine finding out that your boyfriend has a massively pregnant wife that you knew nothing about.

“Imagine getting zero hours of sleep because you know you have to work with him and see his stupid, cheating, lying, stupid freaking face – all day.

“Now imagine going to your favourite coffee spot, ordering your favourite drink, having the team listen to your stupid problems, tell you that you’re sure as sh*t too good for f**kboys like that, make sure that your drink is the best d**n white-coffee-kicker you’ve ever had, then tell you it’s free.”

The grateful customer added that she spent her entire commute to work in tears.

“That was literally the most you could have done for me and I am so grateful for your kindness,” the letter reads further.

Other Reddit users were warmed by the heartfelt interaction between the woman and the staff.

“Wow, that's really special. I hope everything turns out all right for her,” one commented.

While another added: “Proof that, so often, it's the little gestures that can mean the most."
