Women’s Month - 'insulting', 'superficial', 'meaningless'

accreditation

Women’s Day: a day to honour the female for her fighting spirit in the midst of calamities, the bottomless love that she selflessly gives and her beauty in spite of her imperfections.

Not according to Kyla Phil. In a moving column, she explains that what is intended to be a day of emancipation and joy for women has given her a false sense of empowerment. She points out that the struggles faced by South Africa’s women of colour live on, even 50 years after 9 August 1956.

And she suggests that simply a day, or even a month, devoted to women, is not sufficient to put an end to the abuse and crime routinely faced by these women in our post-apartheid country.
