We’re gonna win four medals! Well, that’s according to a recent study by Professional Services Firm PwC. If you’re thinking “That’s not a lot” then shame on you. It’s much more than we achieved at the Beijing Olympics, when we only brought home one silver medal.
And according to Dr Roelof Botha, Economic Adviser to PwC South Africa, this prediction isn’t far-fetched when considering the fact that the country’s athletes have qualified for a total of 73 Olympic events (including swimming). Yay for us!
This is the fourth time that PwC has published an analysis of how medal performance at the Olympic Games can be linked to factors such as past Olympic performance, economics and state support for sport. The study shows that, in general, the number of medals won increases with the population and economic wealth of the country, but less than proportionately.
Unfortunately we didn’t make the study’s estimated list of top 30 winners. We were ranked number 48, which in my opinion, isn’t bad at all!
Obviously superpowers like the US, China and Russia will continue to dominate the top of the medals table, but hopefully team SA won't disappoint. Go team!
To make sure you don't miss any of the action, here is the Olympic Schedule.
