The South African Sugar Association (SASA) say that most of the risk factors associated to Type 2 diabetes are preventable.
Here are some of the risks you might not have not have known about:
Obesity: More weight means a higher risk of insulin resistance, because fat interferes with the body’s ability to use insulin. How too prevent this? Exercise! To decrease insulin resistance, because muscle cells have more insulin receptors than fat cells. In fact being more active also lowers blood sugar levels, It’s a win-win.
Unhealthy eating habits: People who have family members who have been diagnosed with diabetes are at greater risk for developing it themselves. So, if you have a genetic risk it’s all the more important to eat healthy.
Age: The older we get, the greater the risk. It’s sad but true! Scientists theorise that the pancreas ages right along with us, and doesn’t pump insulin as effectively as it did when we were younger. They also become more resistant to insulin…
BP and Cholesterol: The two bad boys- High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol are the major risk factors especially for diabetes.
Do you know of people who have been diagnosed with diabetes, or have been diagnosed yourself? What steps are you taking to ensure your diabetes is under control?
