Jobs that are flexible: Would you ever?

If you’ve ever put your car keys in the fridge, finished your makeup in the car, or tried to make a call using the baby monitor, chances are you’re a modern woman that’s fully aware of today’s fast-paced lifestyle.

No doubt about it, the advice out there is very valuable. You should be eating healthily, getting enough sleep, prioritising your tasks and making time for yourself.

These golden rules promise to fulfil us and solve our problems. Yet even if you do manage to drink eight glasses of water, fill your five-a-day fresh fruit and veg quota, exercise three times a week, sleep for seven full hours and get in an hour of reading before bed, is this enough to keep you happy?

There are many people who argue that having a job is the best way to feel fulfilled. Working towards tangible goals can help you to feel as though you are making a valuable contribution to society. But conventional nine-to-five jobs can be very stressful if you need to find time for your kids, your partner and yourself.

Fortunately, nine-to-five jobs are not the only option. Working freelance or taking on a half-day job could offer you the perfect opportunity to restructure your life to avoid unnecessary stress and maintain your personal wellbeing.

Need some ideas?

There are many fields to choose from when it comes to freelance and half-day jobs. Try to choose something that you are interested in, or if you are already a professional in a particular field, do some research to figure out your options.

1. Writing, editing and design

Many writing, editing and design jobs do not require working set hours in an office. Often, writers actually prefer to work from the comfort of their own home.

2. Working online

Having a job in internet marketing or online copywriting means that you can work anywhere you can access the internet – and today, that’s almost everywhere.

3. Social careers

If you enjoy working with people, consider running a guest house or organising events. While these options may require more full-time attention, they will afford you a flexibility that office jobs do not.

4. Working with numbers

If you are more of a numbers person and would prefer something more structured, think about bookkeeping or payroll and tax administration. You could work as a freelance consultant, or apply for a half-day job with a company.

5. Following your own path

If none of these options appeal to you, why don’t think about starting and running your own business? This way, you can do something that you love in your own time, and be your own boss.

What do I need?

The most important thing you’ll need is the courage to make a drastic change. Chances are that the payoff will be worth it, and you’ll be a happier and more balanced you. If you feel you might need a boost to get you started, why not consider taking an online short course?

GetSmarter, a high touch online education company, offers various short courses in the creative, financial, legal, and management fields. Visit www.GetSmarter.co.za to find out more.
