How to have better meetings

Obviously we all want to be in the first group getting results, but to do that we need to know exactly what it is that makes meetings less of a bore and more of an invigorating, rewarding and productive experience.

The simple answer, ladies and gentlemen, is participation.

Meetings in which every member freely participates, holding nothing back in terms of ideas and contributions, are the most exciting and productive to hold (or attend), and being able to hold meetings like this consistently can have a hugely positive impact on our workforce.

And if this is true, the next logical step for us would be to find out what’s holding our teams back from fully participating during these meetings.

For some there may be legitimate reasons for a lack of participation, such as a bursting to-do list that can’t handle any more entries, but for the most part you’ll probably find it’s because your meetings aren’t solely a positive affair.

What I mean by this is that as long as there are people being reprimanded in meetings, or having their ideas criticised, or not being given an opportunity to contribute, some (if not all) of the attendees will perceive these meetings as a possible threat, and therefore be guarded while attending them.

To really get the best participation from our staff we should remove this threat completely, allowing meetings to be used to their full potential where brainstorming and collaboration are the order of the day and our staff know they are safe from judgement.

Do your reprimanding in private, and with only the individual(s) concerned, and let your meetings be where the magic happens!
