SA employees care more about good coffee than their own safety

accreditation

Office likes and office pet peeves.

It’s a topic every person who works in an office-based environment can talk about for days on end. From lunch food thieves to those people who insist on listening to their music with the volume turned up to eardrum-bursting level, there’s no short amount of things that irritate the average working person.

Because we spend most of our time at the office, it becomes the one environment most of our effort and energies go into. As such, there’s a good emphasis (or at least there should be) placed on the levels of happiness people at work experience.

But what makes South African workers happy?

Good coffee.

Yup, you caffeine guzzlers are serious about the quality of your coffee.

According to a recent poll conducted by Inspiration Office, at least 95% of the 12 000 people who took the poll placed having access to an excellent cuppa as their main priority. This result beat out safety and security (which came in at 91%) and a healthy work environment, which surprisingly came in at third with an 87% vote.

Yeesh. Look, I love my coffee as much as anyone else, but that over a clean office environment and safety?

I’m rather nonplussed.

But, the poll didn’t just focus on what SA workers valued most.

When queried about the list of annoyances and pet peeves, it comes as no surprise that unnecessarily loud colleagues came out on tops.

With a poll result of 88%, colleagues who make a cacophony of noise (either via loud telephone calls or just being disruptive), beat out (what I personally think should have won) people who stink up the office by eating lunch at their desk (which polled in at 76%).

Especially smelly foods. *Side-eyeing a few of my colleagues here*

Nothing like the smell of a fishy sandwich to make you vomit in your mouth just a little bit.

On another note, and surprisingly enough, horrible bosses only came in at third (66%).  Does this mean that people value having a job more over their personal happiness at work? Is working for a bad boss, better than resigning and having to go through the process of looking for a new job?

It certainly seems that way to me.

But, why not tell us about some of your pet peeves? Do you agree with the results of this poll? And what do you love most about your office environment? Share your loves and loathes with us and we’ll feature your comments in a future post.
