You’re typing away, working on an important but boring document. And while you might not totally be feeling the work in front of you, you’re certainly feeling the sudden heaviness of your eyelids.

If only you could be home, snuggling up for a lazy nap. But it’s only 11am – the end of the day still a good number of hours away.

If you frequently experience the mid-morning or afternoon slump, here are ways to ensure your energy levels stay in tip-top shape.

Take a walk. Taking a stroll to the shop opposite your work building or even just walking to your favourite colleague’s desk on the other side of the floor will boost your energy level.

Walking improves blood circulation, which is important because it provides the brain, muscles and veins with oxygen. This will leave you feeling refreshed.

Eat a healthy snack. A sugar-filled snack, such as a chocolate, will give you a momentary sugar-high but leave you feeling extra sluggish and muddled afterwards.

Opt for something like an apple, which is filled with natural sugars and is a good source of fibre.

Apples also have carbs for extra fuel. This will help your body slowly digest the natural sugar, thus avoiding the sugar-high and crash.

Give your eyes a break. Staring into a computer all day strains the eyes and increases fatigue.

Give your eyes a break by spending some time away from the computer – and no, not by having your eyes glued to your cell phone screen!

Stare out the window, read a book (on paper) or talk to a colleague. The latter could be the better option.

"We’re social creatures. We get energy from each other,” Scott Crabtree, a happiness coach, tells Bustle. “Even introverts get a mood boost from social contact – although they may not desire it as much as extroverts."

Straighten your back. Sitting slumped over in your desk chair isn’t only bad for your posture, it makes you tired.

Bad posture puts added strain on your muscles, joints and bones, resulting in the body needing more energy to function.

Drink water. A lack of water disrupts the flow of oxygen to your organs, leaving you feeling worn out.

If you’re a poor water-drinker, have a bottle of water on your desk and take sips whenever you remember. You’re looking at it all day, which makes it hard to forget.
