The festive season is upon us. Instead of being the TV remote hoarder or the frequent fridge-walker, you can get out there and find an interesting job that will help you to earn a few bucks and while away the time.
Gift-wrapping
There’s a definite need for gift-wrapping during the festive period.
It’s a great skill to learn. You can also greet excited children and hear their parents bicker over the amount of money they’ve spent on presents.
Being a gift-wrapper at a local mall for the holidays is a great way to earn pocket money. On average, you can earn between R5 and R10 per gift. Shift hours vary and this means that the more hours you put in, the more pocket money you will earn.
Scuba diving instructor
This one requires some start-up cash, but once you have mastered the art of underwater breathing, there is a big adventure waiting for you.
A short course at an accredited scuba centre will cost you about R4 000. If you have the talent, you can find a job anywhere in the world. All you need is a beach and eager tourists.
Dog-walker
The popular saying is that a dog is a man’s best friend. Since it’s the holiday season, you can earn extra money by offering to take care of the neighbours’ pets while they’re away on holiday.
This job is perfect for someone who loves animals. All you have to do is ensure that the furry ones get fed and go on their daily walks. On average, you can pocket R65 an hour for small breeds and R75 an hour for bigger dogs.
Game ranger
If animals and wildlife are your thing, why not volunteer as a game ranger? You can educate holiday- makers, go on sunset drives and get in touch with nature. This one is definitely for nature lovers. Contact SANParks for more information (sanparks.co.za).
Windscreen washer
Do you have dishwashing liquid, a 500ml plastic bottle and some water? If so, you’re well on your way to pocketing a few bucks. This job is best suited to youngsters who are fast on their feet.
Alternatively, pop into your local garage and ask if they have part-time work for you.
Virtual merchandising
Do you have an eye for fashion and walk past the mannequins in store windows wondering who dresses them? Can you think creatively and put up with the curious looks of passers-by as you stand in the window of a clothing store dressing mannequins? Then go to your local mall and sell your skills to the stores there. The rates range from R1 100 a day to R7 000 a month.
Santa/Mrs Claus
If Christmas gets you excited, and you love the red Christmas suit, then get suited up and become Santa Claus or Mrs Claus. Join the elves and the festivities as children sit on your lap and tell you their never-ending Christmas wish lists. Alternatively, if your camera skills are good, offer your services around your neighbourhood and take family portraits.
Magician
Show off your tricks at kids’ birthday parties. Go to the local restaurants and entertain people while they wait for their food. You can even show off your magic at traffic lights and collect a few smiles and loose change.
