Egotistic Tumelo Madlala, who has proclaimed himself to be the best friend of slain Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana skipper Senzo Meyiwa, conceded he did not have a clear sight of the alleged gun-wielding intruder and it was not because he drank four cans of alcohol when the fatal shooting took place.

On Wednesday, Madlala was grilled under cross-examination by defence advocate Zandile Mshololo, who probed his presence of mind and actions after he realised that Meyiwa had been wounded.

Mshololo immersed Madlala with suggestions that one of the people who was fighting with the intruder could have shot Meyiwa.

This after he had told the court that he fled from the dining area after commotion erupted when singer Kelly Khumalo, her sister Zandi and their mother Ntombi decided to fight with the alleged gunman assaulting him with crutches.

Madlala contended that the incident happened at a rapid pace and the only thing he was concerned about was saving his own life.

Said Mshololo:

You left three women to fight with the intruder who was carrying a gun and ran towards the door where you were helping the deceased to fight a person who you did not know whether he carried a weapon. If Senzo was shot by one of the people who was fighting with the intruder, what would you say to that?

Madlala responded by citing that when he heard the gunshot, he assumed that it was fired by the gun-carrying intruder.

“To me, it appeared that it was the person who entered the house with the firearm because I did not see any other person carrying a gun,” he said.

Mshololo also punched holes in his statement deposed in 2018, when he described the features of the gun, questioning how he was able to identify what type of gun the alleged intruder was carrying if he did not see the person clearly.

He was also portrayed as a disloyal friend after he admitted to having financially benefitted from selling pictures he had captured with Meyiwa for a commercial documentary.

However, Madlala shot back:

The pictures were mine. I did not see the need to share the money with anyone else.

He cited the reasons influencing his decision not to share the proceeds of the material he sold as being his estranged relationship with Meyiwa’s mother.

I didn’t share the money with them because Senzo’s mother does not talk to me, even when I greet her she does not respond. So I could not approach a person like that.
