The much-anticipated ANC Johannesburg regional conference set for this weekend has been postponed. It will now be held at the end of this month.
The conference was expected to come up with a detailed new strategy for the party that finds itself in the opposition benches and out of power in the country’s economic hub.
This after the DA regained power in the local government elections last November. It then went into a coalition with several opposition parties.

But the build up to the conference was overshadowed by the shocking news of former mayor Mpho Moerane’s road accident on Monday night while on his way home from Alexandra township. He is still in a critical condition in hospital.
On Wednesday, the Joburg regional task team (RTT) received the regional dispute resolution committee report which highlighted that 43 branches lodged disputes with the branch general meetings.
“Furthermore, the RTT received an update on the condition of the regional fund-raiser, Cde Mpho Moerane, who is hospitalised following a car accident. The RTT is encouraged by his recovery progress and calls on the people of Johannesburg and South Africa at large to keep him in their prayers. Our thoughts are with the family, particularly his wife and kids,” the party said in a statement.

The task team said postponing the conference made sense.
“To this end, the ANC greater Johannesburg regional task team has therefore resolved to postpone the conference to May 27-29 based on the report of the regional dispute committee.” The statement read:
Moerane was expected to go head to head with current secretary Dada Morero for the chairperson position.
The two former allies fell out last year when Moerane put up his hand to continue as mayor after the local elections, reportedly in violation of an understanding with Morero to make way for him.
The ANC in Johannesburg is still reeling from the death of former mayor Geoff Makhubo who died from Covid-19 complications last year and his replacement Jolidee Matongo who was killed in a car accident a few months later.
