Don Design and a few other famous faces stepped out for an afternoon of cognac and style.

Last Saturday, French cognac brand D’USSÉ invited a few friends of the brand to a luxury modern home in Houghton, one of the older suburbs in Johannesburg, for an experience they called the D’USSÉ VSOP Day Party. This was quite the pivot in location, as the weather in Joburg last week rendered the initial venue a non-viable option.

A building with a narrow but well-positioned balcony provides a view of the canopy of trees, creating that renowned canopy that hangs above Houghton Drive. The theme was orange and white and, for the most part, the guests acted accordingly.

Along with an array of delightful cocktails, there were a few sets by the likes of DJ Fresh, who had a live band as accruements to his set, which was rumoured to be one of five. He did at least three entirely different sets that evening.

A big surprise was Don Design. The late rapper, AKA’s, friend and DJ, who was with the slain lyricist on that fateful night on February 10.

He seemed to be in good spirits and even spun a set himself, but there were more than a few murmurs in the crowd.

Design has been the target at which many accusations about the passing of AKA are being aimed. His Instagram post -a picture of him behind the decks at this party - has the comments below it limited as the hate towards him seems to intensify despite any outcomes of the investigation yet to be presented to the public.

A well-known friend and collaborator of AKA, rapper Da L.E.S was also in attendance. Most of the late rappers’ camp decided to head back to work last weekend with his girlfriend, Nadia Nakai, being accompanied to her return to the public by AKA's father, Tony Forbes.

We also caught up briefly with rapper Gigi Lamayne who said was looking to rap a little more on amapiano beats.

Another person of note at this casual yet sophisticated soirée was broadcaster and media personality Nomalamga Shozi.

This luxury cognac brand is looking to have a few more events of this nature in other major cities in the country and they cannot be faulted for their methods. Everything, from the food to the libations, was well-curated and almost home-like yet somewhat aspirational.
