Do you go to a certain place just because they serve a dish you love – be it the chicken korma in Fordsburg or  bunny chow at your local corner store? In this instalment of Eat This There, Grethe Kemp asks cultural  figures where their favourite places to eat are, or the dishes they make a point of ordering.

MASHABELA GALANE, COMIC

There’s a place in Tembisa that I always go to. It’s a shisa nyama called Slotjhile and it serves the type of food that I can relate to. On Mondays they play only soul music and it draws a more mature crowd. They serve a buffet with five types of meat. I always order the oxtail. Back home in Limpopo there’s a place very close to my heart. It’s called Mma-Mpho’s and it’s run from a container by Mma Mpho. She’s been there for more than 16 years and has managed to employ more than 10 women. You can get a plate of delicious traditional food for R52. They also serve mopane worms.

THEMBISA MDODA, ACTRESS AND TV PERSONALITY

I recently went vegan so I’m at that point where everything excites me about my new lifestyle. There’s a Thai pasta at Fruits & Roots in Bryanston that I love to bits ... but Simply Asia has my heart because a) I’m obsessed with tofu; and b) they are more than happy to customise dishes that have meat in them and make them vegan.

YOUNGSTACPT, RAPPER

In Cape Town I go to Brocka for my signature burger, Die Kaapstad Giemba – it’s got chicken strips, cheese, onion rings, mushroom sauce, mayo, prego sauce and is loaded with fries (see the #Trending cover – it looks lit). In Joburg you’ll find me at the Al-Hamra in Mayfair, where I always order the butternut chicken curry.

NINA HASTIE, TV PERSONALITY

I like the protein flapjack from Nü Health Café in Rosebank and I order it almost every day. Literally almost every day there is a problem with it – they either undercook or burn it. But I really like flapjacks and it’s the only decent guilt-free cheat in the city.

MOGAU ‘THE LAZY MAKOTI’ SESHOENE, CHEF AND AUTHOR

My go-to food places in Johannesburg are The Pantry for its breakfast quarter pounder and Epicure for its spiced sea bass and black rice with tamarind. Okay, now I’m hungry.
