In South Africa, like many other countries, LGBTIQ+ people were denied human rights. However, this country became the first in Africa to decriminalise gay marriage and same-sex relationships. The history of the movement dates back to the 1850s, but gained traction through the infamous gay party raid in 1966, when many LGBTIQ+ people were prosecuted under the newly introduced “three men at a party” clause, which prohibited and criminalised any act of “sexual immorality” between men.
