The cause of Wednesday's fire that nearly "melted" a highway in Johannesburg was definitively proven through a later shootout between alleged cable thieves and City of Johannesburg security guards.
The fire consumed the hollow inner core of the bridge over Carr Street, Fordsburg, and by late Thursday, City inspectors were unable to determine the bridge's safety for road users.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the fire was sparked by cable thieves stealing a high-voltage cable running inside the bridge's side-deck cavity.
