Soweto was the place to be this past weekend. Nhlanhla Lux’s crib got “bombed” with the world’s smallest Molotov cocktail, while cocktails of the alcoholic nature were being enjoyed at Konka night club this past Sunday.

Not for nothing we did see the politically inclined vigilante upon arrival at Konka, walking alongside a large man in all-black and both brothers appeared to be strapped but in a calm mood.

It had been a while since we’d been back at Konka, and things have not tapered off in terms of the excitement and hype this place attracts.

Ahead of the national shutdown, regulars rolled up in their most expensive whips and the establishment was draped in orange, as was the man of the hour Zakes Bantwini, who was headlining the Glenmorangie Experience – his third one at that, with a rather memorable one being at Pretoria's infamous night venue Propaganda last year. This man has been on a tear ever since releasing what is still considered his best album.

He commanded the crowd from the decks like a wizard of sound, as expensive bottles with sparklers and attractive waiters attached to them streamed their way through the packed club.

You couldn’t help but steal a moment or two outside to recuperate, as the club can get quite hot.

Among the clubgoers were singer and songwriter Lady Zamar, who was wearing all-white and, naturally, had her own section right next to Bantwini’s. The man came off the stage after reaching the climax of his set – which usually culminates in the blaring out of the hit song Osama – looking absolutely spent, as though he had left it all on the stage.

It makes you think: So much of our talent walk about town and offer feeble performances, but here is this veteran and Grammy Award-winning artist still going as hard as though he were trying to make a first impression.

That is exactly the attitude to have. Bantwini might be a local artist, but there were more than a few people who had never seen him live before, and he made sure they will never forget experiencing his artistry in the flesh.

Rapper Khuli Chana followed the producer and DJ, and naturally let loose a few of the songs he has in collaboration with the late rapper and hit maker AKA. This provided for a choral-like moment as the audience lovingly sang along to some of AKA’s classics.

It’s been a few years and Konka hasn’t lost any steam; how many other clubs do you know of which you can tune into and watch on TV? People still show up in droves, dressed in their Sunday best and looking to make love to the night, and that’s exactly what all in attendance did.
