Restaurants in four of South Africa's provinces are still serving red-listed seafood, such as pink prawns, bluefin tuna and galjoen, a survey showed.
The World Wide Fund for Nature South Africa (WWF) conducted a survey in 2019 - which was updated in 2021 - of 216 restaurants in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. It looked into where restaurants were sourcing seafood from, as well as the sustainability status of the fish served on both set and seasonal menus.
The Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) has set up a code for determining the sustainability status of fish.
