Govt mulls extending Post Office’s monopoly delivering parcels under 1kg

After years of controversy, the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT) will decide whether to extend or scrap the exclusive legal right of the Post Office to deliver all parcels under 1 kilogram later this month.

This comes after the capacity of the Post Office has been gutted in recent years.

The DCDT will assess the capacity of the South African Post Office (SAPO) and the possibility of enforcing the lighter than 1kg restriction on courier companies in making its determination, the department told News24 in response to questions.
