Impala Platinum said on Monday it is closely monitoring an underground protest at its Bafokeng Rasimone mine in the North West.
As of 15:00, about 2 205 employees were still underground, with the motivations and demands of the protest still to be determined. Management has proactively suspended mining operations at the two shafts and recalled all employees from the underground working areas.
"Impala Bafokeng has notified the relevant authorities and mobilised emergency measures to safeguard the health and safety of all who may be participating voluntarily, or who may have been forced to remain underground against their will," the company said.
