Diversified mining and metals company South32 is looking into procuring nuclear power from the Koeberg power station for its Hillside smelter in order to meet growing global demand for green aluminium.

Speaking to media after releasing results on Thursday, South32 executives said a dedicated team is working on decarbonising the Hillside aluminium smelter in Richards Bay and has identified nuclear power from Koeberg as a potential "green" power source.

"We have a work stream which is trying to access unallocated green energy that exists on the grid today. There is, in part, renewable energy through solar and wind, but the biggest one is actually nuclear, which is a great transition fuel to help with a longer-term greening of Hillside," said South32 COO Noel Pillay.
