The Pretoria High Court has ordered Minister of Safety and Security Bheki Cele to pay R93.9 million, plus interest, to underwriter Lloyd’s of London over a brazen robbery carried out by a gang that included serving police officers in 2014.
Cele had argued that the two officers were acting in a "frolic" of their own, and he could not be held vicariously liable for their role in stealing the cash. This type of liability arises when a person or company is found to be legally responsible for the actions of a third party.
But the court found that the minister was liable for the conduct of the two police employees.
