When constructing the pergola on her stoep in Fish Hoek, Cape Town, Jodi Lawrence used decorative breeze blocks sourced from Facebook Marketplace to create a backrest for the built-in bench. The breeze blocks also serve as a screen to create an intimate atmosphere in this seating area without making it feel ‘closed off’. The subtle floral pattern adds a feminine touch

“In keeping with a modern farmhouse approach, a grey water system that will utilise shower water and bath water in the garden is in the pipeline. We already use a rainwater harvesting system; there’s a 2m-tall corrugated-iron tank right next to the shower,” says JC.
