A Paris Saint-Germain star has now confirmed he would like to represent a certain European country instead of an African nation.

The Cameroon national team has been made a lot of headlines since the turn of the year. In addition to a disappointing round of 16 exit at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, controversy seems to have followed the side, with the appointment of new boss Marc Brys by the Sports Ministry being a huge point of contention for the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT).

Amid the ongoing issues behind the scenes, the west African side have been on a lengthy pursuit of Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike, who is on loan from his parent club PSG for the remainder of the season.

Last month, Brys told French outlet Le Monde that he had spoken to the striker and that his choice "must be respected", although he did not confirm what the player's official decision was.

Ekitike's agent would later deny any conversation between his client and the Cameroon coach.

However, the 21-year-old has now finally broken his silence, indicating that his dream is to represent his country of birth, France.

"I'm going to watch the European Championships on TV during my vacation this summer, that's for sure," said the Reims-born centre-forward.

"But if I show my qualities here later, in Frankfurt, my dream of playing for France can come true. I don't set any limits for myself. Of course I can still progress."

Since being loaned out to Franfurt, Ekitike has registered three goals and two assists in 13 matches, according to Transfermarkt.
