A Million Miles From Normal by Paige Nick (Penguin)
Imagine you've just been fired from your high-flying job as a copywriter, just a week after you find out your fiancé cheated on you.
You flee South Africa to try and start all over in New York City.
When you get there you realise the grass certainly isn't greener on the other side. Sure, they have Jimmy Choo's, lines of white powder, endless parties and sexy men, but as Rachel Marcus finds out, it isn't all it's cracked up to be (no pun intended).
The book will have you laughing out loud, cringing in horror and even shedding the occasional tear. It has everything a girl wants: humour, friendship, sex, men, drama and suspense.
We can all identify with Rachel as she obsessively updates on Facebook about her dating nightmares, rat phobia and desperate need for Five Roses tea. She manages to get herself into such awkward and embarrassing situations, you often find yourself cringing under your duvet on her behalf as you read.
Despite the obvious fun elements of the book, there is also a strong thread of friendship that holds it all together. Rachel and her neighbour Sue share their happiest and saddest moments together, and the predicaments they find themselves in often had me asking myself: "What would I do in that situation?"
I couldn't put this book down and realised that I, like Sue, had found a true friend in Rachel. When I go on my next disastrous date or am knee deep in tissues from a break-up, she would be the girl I call.
